328 Services Delayed in Nine Days
Jamshedpur: In a major push for wildlife conservation, the Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway (SER) has implemented strict speed regulations in forest corridors to safeguard elephants. This initiative prioritizes the protection of the region’s elephant population over strict adherence to train schedules.
Official data reveals that between April 1 and April 9, 2026, these regulations affected 328 train services across the Tata–Jharsuguda and Nugaon–Rourkela sections. Locomotives operated at significantly lower speeds in these sensitive zones, resulting in a cumulative delay of 549.09 minutes (over nine hours).
Protecting High-Risk Wildlife Corridors
The forested stretches along the Jharkhand–Odisha border serve as vital migration routes for elephant herds. To mitigate the risk of collisions, the Railways have intensified coordination with the Forest Department through several key measures:
-
Advance Alerts: Forest officials provide real-time data to loco pilots regarding elephant proximity.
-
Reduced Speed Limits: Strict enforcement of lower speeds ensures that pilots can halt trains immediately if they spot wildlife.
-
Enhanced Surveillance: Ground teams and track inspectors maintain high vigilance in high-risk zones.
“The safety of elephants is paramount. A slight delay is acceptable, but the loss of wildlife is not,” stated a railway official, highlighting the division’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Results and Future Outlook
The initiative has already yielded positive results, with a noticeable decline in elephant-train collisions. Environmentalists have lauded the move but suggest further technological upgrades, such as:
-
Drone Surveillance: For real-time aerial monitoring of herd movements.
-
Sensor-Based Alerts: Implementing AI-driven sensors to trigger automatic alerts when animals approach the tracks.
