Tata Workers’ Union pays tributes to 1920 martyrs

Jamshedpur, March 15: Tata Workers’ Union (TWU) members led by president Sanjiv Kumar Chowdhary, deputy president Sailesh Kumar Singh, vice presidents Shatrughan Rai, Sanjay Singh, Sanjiv Tiwary, assistant secretaries Saroj Kumar Singh, Ajay Chowdhary, treasurer Hari Shankar Singh and members of the executive committee paid homage to the martyrs who were gunned down by mounted police on March 15, 1920.

Speaking on the occasion TWU president Sanjiv Kumar Chowdhary said, “Agitation and workers’ interests are embedded in our cells. The martyrdom of our predecessors instill in us the spirit to fight for the interests of workers.”

TWU research scholar and spokesman Dr MS Singh Manas giving a detailed account of March 15, 1920 observed, “Mounted police fired indiscriminately on protesting workers of TISCO (later Tata Steel) in which five of them Liladhar Chaubey, Raghunath Bhuinya, Damru Lohar, Seva Singh and Kalun Mata were martyred.”

The special memorial meeting concluded with all present observing two minutes’ silence in memory of the five martyrs of 1920.
