Jamshedpur, March 23: In a significant policy shift, South Eastern Railway General Manager Anil Kumar Mishra has announced that shops will no longer be leased on railway land under new guidelines issued by the Railway Board.
The move is aimed at tightening control over railway properties and curbing unauthorized occupation.
Addressing the issue of existing leases, Mishra clarified that any shop operating without a valid lease renewal, or those occupied by individuals other than the original allottees, will be treated as illegal.

Such establishments will face removal in accordance with railway regulations.
He further emphasized that the Railways will continue its drive to clear encroachment from its land and will not hesitate to take stringent action wherever necessary. “The responsibility for rehabilitation of evicted shopkeepers lies with the state government, not the Railways,” he stated.
Highlighting stricter lease norms, the General Manager noted that cases where the original leaseholder has passed away or transferred the shop—formally or informally—to another person, including family members, without proper renewal will also be deemed unauthorized.
The announcement signals a firm stance by the Railways to reclaim its land and enforce compliance with updated lease policies.
