Jamshedpur, April 2: Tata Steel achieved a significant milestone by producing a record-breaking 20.5 million tonnes of steel during the financial year 2023-‘24. This includes noteworthy contributions from various plants, such as 10.6 MT from the Jamshedpur plant, 5 MT from Meramandali Angul, and 1 MT from the recently acquired Nilanchal Ispat.

During the cake cutting celebration of the new financial year 2024-‘25 at Works General Office (WGO) lawns of Jamshedpur Works, CEO cum MD, TV Narendran, highlighted the company’s global presence while acknowledging the need for a global mindset. He emphasized the challenges lying ahead, including uncertainties regarding the company’s mines’ availability in future, necessitating cost reduction and increased productivity.

Safety remained a paramount concern for Narendran, who expressed distress over the four fatalities that occurred in various Tata Steel plants during the preceding financial year. He stressed the importance of striving for zero accidents and commended departments with exemplary safety records.

Narendran also lauded various divisions within Tata Steel for their achievements, including increased production in the tube division, successful initiatives like using hydrogen in e-blast furnace for the first time in India, and profitable performances by subsidiaries like Nest In and Agrico.
However, Narendran acknowledged the challenges posed by China’s significant steel exports, which are expected to further intensify competition in the domestic market.
Despite these challenges, Narendran expressed optimism, citing the Indian government’s efforts to improve infrastructure and investments, which, he believes will create a conducive environment for Tata Steel’s operations.
During the event, the company launched its annual operating plan under the theme ‘Leading Tomorrow – Today,’ symbolizing its commitment to staying ahead in the industry. The ceremony was attended by key figures within Tata Steel, including VP (Iron Making) Uttam Singh and Union President Sanjeev Chaudhary.
Meanwhile, Executive Committee members of the Tata Workers Union (TWU) expressed discontent after being excluded from the cake-cutting ceremony organized to mark the new financial year. Previously, all committee members were invited to such events, but invitations ceased during the pandemic. Despite the return to normalcy, their exclusion sparked frustration among the committee members.
