Jamshedpur, Sept 10: After years of struggle, the drinking water crisis in several settlements of Burmamines was finally set to be resolved. Residents of Vinoba Ashram, Sidhu Kanu Basti, and Vinoba Basti had long relied on tanker supply and temporary arrangements due to the absence of permanent water connections.
Former Jamshedpur East MLA and current West MLA Saryu Roy had earlier written to the Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Limited (TSUISL) management, urging water connections for five affected localities—Vinoba Ashram, Sidhu Kanu Basti, Vinoba Basti, Das Basti, and Koyla Tal Basti. However, no action was taken for over a year.
Last week, the Janata Dal (U) organized a meeting with residents, warning of a large-scale agitation if water connections were not provided. Following this intervention and pressure from MLA Roy, Tata Steel UISL had now initiated action.
On Wednesday, a survey of the affected settlements was conducted by company officials in the presence of JD (U) leaders and Jusco representatives. The survey marked the beginning of work toward providing permanent water connections.
JD (U) District Vice President Durga Rao and Burmamines Police Station Area President Bablu Kumar stressed that the party had been consistently raising residents’ concerns. They warned that if connections were delayed, agitation would resume.
Calling clean drinking water a basic right linked to health and life, JD (U) leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the supply of safe water to all settlement residents.
