Jamshedpur: Tata Motors, a key player in the automotive industry, has initiated a five-day block closure at its Jamshedpur plant, starting today. The management’s decision to suspend work from December 28 to December 30 marks the third block closure this December, as per the agreement established on July 31, 2017.
The announcement came through a circular issued by Tata Motors Plant Head, Ravindra Kulkarni, stating an additional one-day holiday on January 1, 2024. In lieu of this holiday, employees will be required to make up for the missed workdays on later dates. Notably, December 31, 2023, falls on a Sunday, which is the regular weekly holiday for the employees. The plant is scheduled to resume operations on January 2, 2024.
During the block closure period, a policy deduction of 50 percent of the company’s leave and 50 percent of the employees’ leave will be enforced. The deducted amount will be adjusted against the salary of employees whose Privilege Leave (PL) or Casual Leave (CL) is terminated. Employees or officers summoned for duty during the closure must comply, while those absent will face a deduction of the entire day’s salary, with the day considered as their holiday.
Of significance, six employees will not receive any salary during the block closure period, emphasizing the financial implications for workers during this temporary work suspension. The ripple effect of this decision is expected to impact production not only within Tata Motors but also among companies dependent on its supply chain.
