Jamshedpur, Sept. 21 :  The Symposium on “Non-destructive evaluation and magnetic materials  (NDEMM)”, organised by Material Research Society of India (MRSI) Jamshedpur Chapter in association with CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory and ISNT Jamshedpur Chapter kicked off today at CSIR-NML Lecture Hall.

The Symposium on Non-Destructive Evaluation and Magnetic Materials (NDEMM) focused on some of the recent developments in potential areas of Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) for structural health monitoring and advanced magnetic materials. The topics of the symposium includes: (a) Conventional & advanced NDE techniques for material evaluation, (b) NDE for Power plants, Aerospace, Railways, and structural engineering, (c) Soft  & Hard Magnetic Materials & their applications, (d) Hybrid magnetic materials, (e) Magnetic materials for bio-medical applications, and (f) Other research areas related to subject of interest.

The Director, CSIR NML Dr. Indranil Chattoraj welcomes the Chief Guest, invited speakers, students, participants, members of MRSI and ISNT Jamshedpur Chapter. He introduces the Chief Guest of the symposium; Prof O.N. Mohanty Director, (Technology & Academic Initiative), RSB Metal Tech., RSB Group, Pune. Prof O.N. Mohanty recalls his technical experience at CSIR-NML and TATA Steel. Further, he explained the material challenges especially steels in Oil and Gas, Automotive, Power plant and construction industries. He elaborated the technical and economic aspect of slowdown in the economy both by domestic and international events.  Also the need of indigenous technology development in the area of non-destructive evaluation and advanced materials.

Technical lectures by renowned researchers across India started after the Inaugural address. Prof. Krishnan Balasubramanian, IIT Madras detailed on the electro-magnetic based ultrasonic techniques and technology developed for Industries at IIT Madras. Mr. S Balamurugan, TATA Steel spoken about Industry 4.0 and need of advanced sensing systems for reliable measurement and reducing steel plant downtime.  Dr. S.T. Arasu explained electromagnetic NDE techniques developed at of IGCAR-Kalpakkam for nuclear industry, Prof. Subodh De of IACS, Kolkata explained the magnetic concepts for future memory storage devices. Prof. Amitava Basu Mallick, IIEST Shibpur presented development of MnBi magnets for electric vehicles and energy sector. Finally, Dr. Arvind Sinha presented electromagnetic NDE techniques, Magnetic materials and nanomaterials developed at CSIR-NML for the last 25 years for the Industries.

The poster session is also organized for the students and industrial delegates in the area of sensors, NDE techniques, magnetic alloys and nanomaterials. Dr. A.K. Panda, Convener of the Symposium NDEMM gave vote of thanks to the Chief Guest, Invited speakers, Participants, Press/Media persons and industrial Sponsors. The symposium is organize also to appreciate the three decades of research work done by Dr. Amitava Mitra in the area of electromagnetic NDE techniques and Advanced Magnetic materials. The symposium makes way for future collaborations and joint activities in the sensors and advanced materials.

To mark the occasion, a Souvenir of Symposium was also released. Besides oral presentations from these invited speakers, posters were also presented by the authors.

Around 20 delegates are from different parts of India participated and seven invited speakers deliberated in the two technical sessions today. The delegates are from IIT Madras, IGCAR, Kalpakkam, Tata Steel, IIEST, Shibpur, IACS, Kolkata, and many more engineering colleges.
