Smart meters to be installed for 35,000 Adityapur consumers from December

Jamshedpur: In a new initiative starting December, around 35,000 electricity consumers in Adityapur will experience a significant upgrade as smart meters are set to replace conventional ones. The initiative, under the Central Government’s Re-Vamp Scheme, aims to enhance the power distribution system. A preliminary survey by the designated agency has already commenced, and the installation will begin soon, according to Adityapur’s Electrical Executive Engineer, Anup Prasad.

This upgrade covers approximately 31,000 domestic, 3,000 commercial, and 800 industrial consumers in the Adityapur division. The Re-Vamp Scheme not only introduces smart meters but also includes measures to modernize the electrical infrastructure. These measures include converting overhead lines to Aerial Bunch (AB) cables, installing 250 additional transformers of varying capacities (500/200/100 KVA), and dividing 33 KVA and 11 KVA feeders into smaller segments for better efficiency.

The plan also entails transitioning all low-tension (LT) lines to AB cables and undergrounding lines where necessary. This overhaul is designed to enhance the reliability of the power supply and reduce technical losses. Prasad emphasized that the DPR (Detailed Project Report) for this initiative was submitted in December 2021, and the groundwork is now in full swing.

Under the scheme, smart meters will be installed in phases, starting with urban consumers. The smart meters aim to bring transparency to electricity billing, reducing disputes over meter readings and enhancing consumer convenience. Additionally, the government has already implemented a scheme providing 200 units of electricity free of charge. Consumers utilizing up to 200 units will not receive an electricity bill, making the transition to smart meters even more beneficial.

The Re-Vamp Scheme is part of a broader initiative to modernize the power distribution systems in key urban areas across Jharkhand, including Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Dhanbad. By integrating cutting-edge technology, the scheme aims to create a robust and efficient power distribution network for a sustainable future.
