Jamshedpur, April 1: The steel city experienced scorching temperatures on Monday as the mercury soared to 40.9 degrees Celsius, leaving residents grappling with intense heat. Concerns mounted among parents and children commuting to schools, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a red alert for heat wave.

Residents have been advised to venture outdoors only for urgent needs between 12:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon, with the forecast suggesting prolonged heat conditions in the coming days.

Sweltering heat conditions have enhanced the demand for cool soothers like lemonade, soda, sattu, ice gola and chaat. Water melon and sugarcane juice vendors have also been doing brisk business as residents seek respite from the sweltering heat.

Local markets, particularly Sakchi Bazaar, witnessed a surge in sales of sunglasses, caps, and other sun protection items. Traders reported heightened demand, indicative of the public’s awareness of the need for sun protection.

However, the scorching heat posed challenges for school children and parents during afternoon commutes, with Verma Prasad from Kadma expressing difficulties in transporting children home amidst unbearable heat and traffic congestion.

Street vendors, including Pandit Ji near Loyola School, noted increased sales of ice chaat, gola, and shikanji, reflecting the public’s preference for cooling refreshments during the hot weather.

The Meteorological Department has warned of further temperature rise in the coming days, urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
