Rampaging langur sparks panic in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, April 1: If the recent leopard scare was not enough, a truant langur is now on a virtual rampage ensuring that citizens do not breathe easy. At least, not yet. Eyes are being raised as people have started questioning the efficacy of the Forest Department’s operations in Jamshedpur, as neither the leopard nor the langur has been captured by the department.

The langur’s thus far unrestrained forays has resulted in injuries to five persons, including forest department officials, creating an atmosphere of fear among the city’s residents. The incident unfolded in the Dhatkidih area of Jamshedpur, where the langur caused chaos for hours.

Initially, the langur entered Tarapore School and remained concealed under children’s study tables for an extended period after school hours. Forest department officials attempted to capture the langur using a net and bait, but the situation escalated when the animal emerged from under the table, biting and injuring several persons and damaging vehicles in the process.

The ensuing panic among residents, particularly parents picking up their children from school, persisted for hours as the forest department struggled to contain the langur. Witnesses reported forest department officials adopting passive measures, retreating to their vehicles whenever the langur approached, leaving local residents vulnerable to the langur’s attacks.

Children remained confined in the school premises for an extended duration, anxiously awaiting the langur’s departure. Despite the forest department’s efforts to capture the langur by using cages and nets, it continued on its rampaging spree.
