Jamshedpur, Apr 18: Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary: With the Sendra festival scheduled for May 5, the Forest Department has launched intensive preparations to prevent the illegal hunting of wildlife in the Dalma forest area. Traditionally marked by tribal rituals, Sendra has seen instances of hunting in past years.

DFO Saba Alam Ansari informed that 20 forest department vehicles will patrol the sanctuary during the festival. CCTV cameras have been installed at strategic forest entry points and drone surveillance will also be deployed.

“Our aim is to preserve the sanctity of the forest while allowing traditional worship. We are trying to build consensus with the tribal community so that hunting can be avoided,” said Ansari.

Checkpoints are being set up to prevent entry with traps or weapons. Traps are also being monitored to preempt poaching activities. Department officials plan to hold a series of meetings with tribal leaders in the next few days to ensure cooperation.

Due to increased sightings of tigers, bears and elephants in the region, officials are on high alert to avoid any mishaps during the celebration. “We are prioritizing mutual understanding over enforcement, but we’re prepared for any eventuality,” said a senior forest officer.
