Kolkata: West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi officially dissolved the State Legislative Assembly on May 7, 2026, amid a high-stakes political standoff. The constitutional move comes as outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reportedly refuses to resign from her post, despite a landslide victory by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recent polls.
Constitutional Dissolution
Invoking his authority under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution of India, Governor Ravi issued the order effective Thursday. A formal notification in the Kolkata Gazette confirmed the dissolution, which marks the end of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) term following an election that saw the BJP secure 207 seats, while the TMC was reduced to 80.
Standoff Over Public Mandate
The dissolution follows days of friction, during which the TMC leader alleged that the electoral mandate was rigged. Banerjee’s stated intention to bypass the traditional resignation process has drawn sharp rebukes from national leaders.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra termed the refusal to step down as “anarchic,” stating that such actions threaten the peaceful transfer of power that defines Indian democracy. Patra emphasized that resisting the public verdict is not merely a political dispute but an attack on the country’s constitutional framework.
Institutional Concerns
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also condemned the outgoing Chief Minister’s stance. In a social media post, Pradhan argued that by rejecting the public mandate and refusing to tender her resignation to the Governor, Banerjee is attempting to erode the credibility of the Election Commission and security forces.
The Minister added that this resistance to accountability serves as a concerning example of compromised democracy, undermining the very pillars that ensure secure and fair elections in the country.
