Jamshedpur, April 11: Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy has urged the Deputy Commissioner of East Singhbhum to constitute a coordination committee to ensure the smooth functioning of the Mango drinking water project. The proposed committee should include officials from the Mango Municipal Corporation, Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, project contractors, and the district administration. The committee would be responsible for regularly reviewing water supply conditions in areas facing inconsistent or no water provision.
In a series of separate meetings held today with the Deputy Commissioner, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Mango Municipal Corporation, and the Executive Engineer of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, Saryu Roy raised concerns about the ongoing drinking water crisis in Mango and called for immediate action to restore supply across all affected localities.
The Executive Engineer assured that a Junior Engineer from the department would continuously monitor the project’s operation. This engineer would ensure uninterrupted water supply from the treatment plant to all designated tank areas. For areas where pump motor issues persisted, a bypass system would be installed using a key to facilitate water supply. The financial requirements for this temporary solution would be assessed within two days, with costs to be borne by the Mango Municipal Corporation.
Additionally, both, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner and the Executive Engineer assured that water supply to several affected areas would be restored within two days.
Roy also pointed out that several areas under the Mango Municipal Corporation had not received drinking water since 2017–18, despite residents continuing to receive water bills. To address this, the process of identifying the connection points between the service pipelines and the main pipelines had been initiated. Preliminary findings suggested that in many places, the service pipelines were either of the same size as the main lines or were laid at a much lower level than the main line, preventing effective water flow.
The MLA instructed the Mango Municipal Corporation and the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department to begin corrective work on these faults that occurred during the initial pipeline installation. He expressed confidence that, with better coordination among the district administration, the municipal body, and the water department, and with the rectification of past errors, the water supply situation in Mango could be significantly improved within a week.
