Jamshedpur, June 1: East Singhbhum district is poised to welcome its second medical college, slated to be housed within the premises of Khasmahal Sadar Hospital. This initiative aligns with a broader plan to establish medical colleges by upgrading Sadar hospitals across various districts of the state, including Khunti, Bokaro, Sahibganj, Ramgarh, and Giridih.
The proposed medical college at Khasmahal Sadar Hospital aims to offer MBBS studies with an initial capacity of 100 seats. In February, the Jharkhand Health Department forwarded a proposal to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for consideration. Health Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh is actively assessing the infrastructure and available facilities in Sadar hospitals to facilitate the expansion.
A thorough inspection of Jamshedpur Sadar Hospital is imminent to provide necessary details to the NMC and secure the requisite Letter of Permission (LOP) for the establishment of the medical college. Presently, Jharkhand boasts medical colleges in Dhanbad, Ranchi, Dumka, Palamu, Hazaribagh, and MGM in Jamshedpur.
The addition of medical colleges in Bokaro, Ramgarh, Sahibganj, Khunti, and Giridih is anticipated to cater to the educational needs of students within the state. A minimum of 320 beds in the hospital is mandated to qualify for a medical college license.
Furthermore, plans are underway to enhance the infrastructure of Sadar hospitals across multiple districts, ensuring compliance with standards. Initiatives include the provision of essential facilities such as blood banks, ICUs, dialysis centers, and oxygen plants. Proposals for installing CT scan and MRI machines have been forwarded to the state headquarters.
The journey of Sadar Hospital commenced in January 2013 with 48 patients, evolving over the years to accommodate over 700 patients daily. Notable milestones include the establishment of a TB testing center in January 2017, a blood bank in October 2019, and the subsequent addition of a children’s ward, ICU, dialysis center, and oxygen plant
