Kolkata (IANS): The West Bengal government on Monday extended the suspension of three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers by another 120 days to ensure an unhindered departmental inquiry into their alleged dereliction of duty during the initial handling of the August 2024 RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case.
The extension affects former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, former DCP (North Division) Abhishek Gupta, and former DCP (Central Division) Indira Mukherjee. Secretarial insiders at Nabanna confirmed that the administration extended the suspension to guarantee a proper, influence-free departmental probe.
Intensifying Scrutiny and Fresh Interrogations
The move coincides with a renewed push by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which recently formed a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to launch a fresh probe into the horrific crime. Just last month, SIT members rigorously interrogated both Gupta and Mukherjee to record their statements.
The case, which dates back to the recovery of a junior doctor’s body inside the RG Kar premises on August 9, 2024, originally triggered unprecedented global protests. While public outrage initially forced the state to transfer Goyal and Gupta due to an allegedly botched investigation, Mukherjee had initially retained her post despite facing fierce criticism for allegedly sharing misleading information during press briefings.
Following a dynamic shift in state leadership and the subsequent reopening of the RG Kar files this past May, the administration placed all three officers under suspension and initiated formal departmental proceedings.
