The Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary welcomed a new resident on Monday as a seven-month-old elephant calf named Shekhar arrived from the Gumla Forest Division.
Shekhar joins the sanctuary’s popular resident elephants, Rajni and Badal.
Forest officials hope Dalma’s natural environment will support his well-being.
The calf previously got separated from his wild herd in Gumla.
Forest personnel attempted to reunite Shekhar with his herd.
However, the young calf became separated again shortly after the reunion effort.
Gumla forest officials then contacted Dalma Divisional Forest Officer Saba Alam Ansari.
Authorities completed legal formalities to transfer the calf safely to Dalma.
Upon arrival, the playful calf presented a challenge for the forest staff.
Staff members eventually secured his legs with ropes to control him.
Rajni’s mahout then hand-fed the young calf to comfort him.
Rajni and Badal already draw many visitors to the sanctuary each year.
Shekhar’s arrival increases the total number of resident elephants at Dalma.
The Forest Department now manages the key responsibility of providing proper care.
Staff will ensure nutrition and a safe environment for the young elephant.
Tourists visiting Dalma will now enjoy seeing the newest addition to the sanctuary.
