Congress slams BJP over MGNREGA attendance scam

The Congress party launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday over alleged fake attendance cases in rural employment schemes.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned the ruling party over repeated instances of corruption in welfare programs.
He asked how many more sins the Bharatiya Janata Party would commit using the name of Lord Ram.
Ramesh highlighted a fresh case of fake attendance through cloned apps in the Sant Kabir Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh.
He recalled that a similar incident of fraudulent attendance had surfaced earlier in Gorakhpur district as well.
The former rural development minister stated that repeated exposures of attendance fraud via clone applications represented an extremely serious matter.
He linked the attendance scam to previous allegations involving the theft of donations meant for the Ram temple construction.
Ramesh accused the ruling government of plundering the rights of poor citizens while invoking religious sentiments.
Last month, the opposition party criticized the government over similar fraudulent activities within the newly implemented rural employment framework.
Reports claimed fraudsters used a clone application resembling the official monitoring software to mark fake attendances using stored photos.
He asserted that attacking employment rights under the guise of devotion reflected the true operating style of the ruling party.
The central government recently introduced the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Act across the country on July 1.
This new legislation officially replaced the two-decade-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act enacted during the UPA tenure.
The Congress continues to demand accountability and a thorough investigation into the systemic misuse of digital attendance systems.
