Jamshedpur: The public’s growing discontent with the working style of the traffic police in Jamshedpur has sparked a political response, with the AJSU Party stepping forward to address the issue. On Monday, a delegation led by AJSU Party East Singhbhum District Committee President Kanhaiya Singh met the Deputy Commissioner to voice concerns over the deteriorating traffic situation in the city.
The delegation highlighted serious grievances, accusing the traffic police of focusing excessively on vehicle checking while failing to curb crimes such as murder, robbery, chain snatching, dacoity, theft, and drug smuggling. The party alleged that police personnel conduct helmet checks every 500 meters, often hiding behind bushes to catch violators, leading to frequent accidents.
Further, the delegation criticized the police for alleged harassment, stating that after one officer collects a fine, another imposes a penalty again, causing unnecessary inconvenience to the public. The issue of illegal parking was also raised, particularly concerning large vehicles parked on main roads like Swarnarekha Burning Ghat to Mango Chowk and RD Tata Roundabout to Burmamines, leading to severe traffic congestion and accidents.
Additionally, AJSU accused the authorities of selectively enforcing traffic rules, taking strict action against two-wheelers while ignoring violations by three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and heavy vehicles. Reports of heavy vehicles being granted passes during no-entry hours, contributing to road mishaps, were also brought to light.
District President Kanhaiya Singh demanded immediate intervention from the Deputy Commissioner and warned of a phased agitation if corrective measures were not taken. Several AJSU workers, including Appu Tiwari, Mangal Tudu, Chandeshwar Pandey, Somu Bhowmik, Shailendra Sinha, and Mrityunjay Singh, were present during the discussions.
