Proud to see rural women leading change: Tata Steel VP Sundara Ramam at Disha Convocation in Jamshedpur

Disha convocation celebrates 620 rural women leaders at XLRI auditorium

Jamshedpur, October 9: Tata Steel Foundation hosted the Disha Convocation today at the XLRI auditorium, celebrating the achievements of 620 women from six operational units – Jamshedpur, Noamundi, West Bokaro, Jamadoba, Joda, and Kalmong – who have successfully completed their leadership training.

Present on the occasion were Purnima Das Sahu, Member of Legislative Assembly, Jamshedpur East and chief guest on the occasion, D.B Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel and Director, Tata Steel Foundation and Shailaja Sundara Ramam as guests of honour.

Launched in FY 2021-22, Disha is Tata Steel Foundation’s flagship programme aimed at empowering women from marginalised communities to become active leaders and changemakers in their local communities. Through its structured leadership modules, the initiative helps women build confidence, take collective action, and influence social, economic, and political change.

The ceremony included a conversation with Disha leaders. On the occasion, Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel and Director Tata Steel Foundation said: “It is a moment of pride for us to see women from rural landscape taking the lead towards change. There are several examples across the nation right from the helm that proves that hard work and determination have fuelled the dedication of women and their commitment to the betterment of society. Disha has identified this intrinsic need and is constantly enabling women across Jharkhand and Odisha to realise their leadership potential. We thank our communities for co-creating this journey of change.”

To date, over 5,500 women have received leadership training, and 3,729 of them have already been convocated. With the goal of transforming 6,000 women into community changemakers, Disha continues to strengthen women’s leadership and participation in grassroots development.

The convocation, held under the theme “Enlightened Equitable Society,” celebrated not only the completion of the women’s leadership journey but also their commitment to building a more inclusive society. The event provided a platform for graduating women to share their inspiring stories, experiences, and future aspirations, reflecting the spirit of resilience and transformation that defines Disha.

The convocation stands as a milestone in Tata Steel Foundation’s ongoing journey towards creating an equitable society through empowerment, leadership, and sustainable community development.
