Kidneys play a silent yet vital role in keeping the body healthy. These bean-shaped organs filter waste, balance fluids, regulate blood pressure, and support Red Blood Cell production—functions we often take for granted until something goes wrong.
With millions affected by kidney diseases worldwide, awareness is crucial. Studies across India indicate a significant prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), with estimates suggesting a national average ranging from 7.5% to 17.2%, with higher rates in rural areas and among populations with high exposure to agricultural chemicals, which could be particularly relevant to certain regions of Jharkhand due to its agrarian nature.
World Kidney Day, observed on 13th March 2025, serves as a global reminder of the importance of kidney health. This year’s theme, “Prioritising Early Detection for Healthy Kidneys,” highlights the value of catching kidney issues early before they progress.
Key Kidney Functions:
– Filter waste and toxins
– Regulate blood pressure
– Balance electrolytes
– Support Red Blood Cell production
– Maintain bone health
Common Risk Factors:
– Diabetes
– Hypertension
– Cardiovascular disease
– Obesity
– Family history of kidney disease
Other contributing factors include acute kidney injury, pregnancy-related issues, autoimmune diseases, low birth weight, frequent kidney stones, and congenital abnormalities.
The Importance of Early Detection
Kidney disease is often called a “silent killer” because it may progress without symptoms. Early detection can:
– Prevent disease progression
– Reduce complications
– Improve treatment outcomes
– Support overall health
Recommended Screenings for At-Risk Individuals:
– Blood tests: Check serum creatinine and GFR
– Urine tests: Detect early signs of kidney damage
– Blood pressure monitoring
– Imaging tests: Identify structural problems
– Kidney biopsy (when needed)
Preventive Measures:
- Healthy Lifestyle
Stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet low in salt and processed foods, and exercise regularly. - Manage Health Conditions
Keep blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol in check. - Avoid Harmful Substances
Limit over-the-counter painkillers, be cautious with supplements, and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol. - Routine Health Check-ups
Regular screenings help monitor kidney function and catch issues early. - Listen to Your Body
Watch for warning signs like fatigue, swelling, changes in urination, or back pain.
By adopting healthy habits and staying alert to risk factors, you can protect your kidneys and promote lifelong wellness.
