Jamshedpur: Public concern intensified across Jharkhand on Friday after petroleum companies increased petrol and diesel prices by ₹3 per litre with effect from 6:00 AM. The revised rates pushed petrol prices in Jamshedpur beyond the ₹100 mark for the first time in recent months, adding to the burden on consumers already grappling with rising living costs.
Following the hike, petrol in Jamshedpur rose from ₹97.86 per litre to ₹100.86 per litre, while diesel prices increased from ₹92.62 to ₹95.76 per litre. The sudden increase immediately triggered panic buying at several petrol pumps across the city and adjoining areas, where long queues of vehicles were witnessed throughout the day.
Reports of fuel shortages also surfaced from different districts, including Ranchi, where several petrol pumps reportedly faced temporary depletion of stock due to heavy consumer demand. Sources indicated that the daily fuel supply in Ranchi had fallen by nearly one lakh litres, worsening the pressure on retail outlets.
In Jamshedpur, many consumers were seen purchasing petrol and diesel in excess quantities fearing a possible shortage in the coming days. The unexpected rush disrupted normal operations at several pumps, with some outlets struggling to maintain regular supply during peak hours.
Amid the growing panic, allegations of overpricing have also emerged from certain localities. Consumers claimed that a few fuel outlets were charging rates higher than the officially notified prices. District officials stated that such complaints are being monitored closely and strict action would be initiated against any violations.
The Association and district administration have jointly appealed to citizens not to believe rumours regarding fuel scarcity. Officials clarified that there is no actual shortage of petrol or diesel in Jharkhand and attributed the temporary pressure to panic buying and sudden demand escalation.
Authorities urged people to purchase fuel only according to their genuine requirements so that uninterrupted supply can be maintained for all consumers.
The rise in fuel prices has already started affecting daily life and market sentiment. Concerns are mounting over possible hikes in transportation fares, as operators of auto-rickshaws, buses, and commercial vehicles indicated that they may be forced to revise fares if fuel prices continue to climb. Economists and traders have also warned that sustained fuel inflation could lead to an increase in prices of essential commodities, further burdening the common public.
