Jamshedpur, Sept 11: A pre-dawn tragedy struck Burmamines on Wednesday when a speeding truck mowed down Sharanjit Singh, a resident of Namda Basti, leaving the locality in shock and anger.
The accident occurred between 3:30 am and 4:00 am near Mukhi Basti. Singh, who had set out on his Splendor motorcycle to bring home a relative from Tatanagar Railway Station, was hit by truck number (JH 05 AK 5732).
Eyewitnesses said the truck dragged him and his two-wheeler for nearly 200 meters before halting. Singh succumbed to his injuries instantly, his body crushed under the vehicle.
In the aftermath, the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled, further fuelling outrage among locals. Within hours, residents of Mukhi Basti gathered in large numbers and blocked the road near Burmamines Tube Company gate. Shouting slogans, they demanded immediate arrest of the driver and stronger enforcement against reckless truck movement in the area.
Police reached the site to pacify the protesters and assured swift action. Singh’s body was later sent to MGM Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the absconding driver.
The incident has once again raised questions about road safety in Jamshedpur’s industrial zones, where heavy vehicle accidents have become alarmingly frequent.
Locals stressed that unless strict monitoring and traffic regulation are implemented, such tragedies will continue to haunt the community
