NML to set up Technology Incubation Centre to promote innovation

Jamshedpur, Feb 4: City-based National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur, under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is all geared up to set up a Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) for incubating technologies and services in the domain of minerals, metals and materials sectors industries.

Officials of NML informed that the objective of opening such a center is to provide industries an appropriate platform and environment to nurture innovation leading to new product/process development, addressing key problems of industries through mutual participation, providing basic technological support and services and the use of the extensive infrastructure available at NML.

N.G. Goswami, chief scientist and adviser, NML Jamshedpur, said, “In the era of globalization and competitive market, innovation and continuous improvement is the key to sustenance for any organization.

Therefore, it is proposed that, CSIR-NML and industries come together, join hands and venture into an exciting and mutually rewarding path of translating viable technologies to the market for the industry and society to derive value.

The incubation centre proposes to have a self sustained business model derived from usage charges on services and utilities, technology transfer fee, IP licensing charges, costs of equipment and pilot plant utilization, contract research charges etc.”

He went on to inform that a brainstorming program on Technology Incubation Centre is being organized on February at CSIR-NML, wherein Jamshedpur based as well as industrialists and entrepreneurs from across the country will participate.

NML is the third in the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) family of 38 laboratories. The laboratory was formally inaugurated and dedicated to the nation on the November 26, 1950 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

It is one of the premier publicly funded R&D organizations of the country in the area of metallurgy and materials research backed-up by state of the art infrastructure (both at laboratory and pilot plant level), substantial number of technology development initiatives available for commercialization, intellectual property (IP) holding and research publications.

In recent years, the laboratory has emerged as a leading technology provider to a number of industries including start-up entrepreneurs. The laboratory has high quality human resources including 125 scientists and highly skilled technical personnel.
