Road Safety Committee meeting focuses on accident prevention

Jamshedpur, Aug 30: District Transport Officer (DTO) of Jamshedpur Dinesh Ranjan convened a meeting of Traffic and Road Safety Committee, East Singhbhum, at Jamshedpur Collectorate on Tuesday. He reviewed various efforts being put in by the district transport department, traffic police and other stakeholders in preventing road accidents and ensuring greater safety to citizens, especially youngsters.
The DTO discussed issues pertaining to installation of traffic signals in urban areas, spreading awareness among minor school kids for not driving vehicles, taking necessary measures to identify black spots, preventing sale of liquor in restaurants and motels situated along the highway and expediting measures to provide compensation to victims of hit and run cases.
The DTO said the Road Transport and Highway Ministry, Government of India, had introduced a scheme to motivate Good Samaritans for helping road accident victims by giving them cash reward of Rs 5000 and a letter of appreciation. He said the citizens should help accident victims without delay and help them get medical attention within the golden hour. By doing so, many lives can be saved, he said.
The DTO said a joint team of Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and Traffic and Road Safety Committee would inspect venues for traffic signal installation in urban areas. DSP Traffic has also been asked to give a proposal in this regard, he said.
According to the DTO, six new black spots were identified in the city. He said 21 road accidents were reported last month in which 11 people died and 15 got severely injured.
