Mobile snatching incident foiled in Kapali; Locals demand better policing

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur: A surge in snatching incidents in the Kapali has triggered fear and a sense of insecurity among local residents. People now feel uneasy stepping out even during daylight hours, while venturing into deserted stretches or using mobile phones on the streets—especially at night—has become increasingly risky.

An incident on Tuesday night has once again raised serious questions over law and order in the locality. On an isolated stretch of the road behind Al Kabir Polytechnic College, local resident Shabana Khatoon was returning home on foot with her sister after visiting a doctor.

While walking, Shabana was talking on her mobile phone when two youths on a scooter suddenly approached them and attempted to snatch the phone. However, due to Shabana’s alertness and resistance, the criminals failed in their attempt. As she raised an alarm, the scooter-borne youths fled the spot.

Notably, the entire incident was captured on a nearby CCTV camera. The footage clearly shows the accused trying to carry out the snatching and then speeding away after failing. Upon receiving information, Kapali OP police reached the spot and initiated an investigation.

Police officials said efforts are underway to identify the suspects using the CCTV footage and assured that the culprits would be arrested soon. Local residents allege that rising drug addiction in the area is a major factor behind such crimes, with several youths resorting to snatching to fund their addiction. They have demanded increased night patrolling and strict action against the drug trade to restore a sense of safety in the area.
