Jamshedpur: Harjit Singh Dhami, a survivor of the 1984 Hazaribagh Sikh massacre, has been awarded a compensation of Rs. 3.50 lakh by the Deputy Commissioner of Hazaribagh, following a long-standing legal and social struggle for justice.
The compensation process was set in motion after a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Jharkhand High Court by Satnam Singh Gambhir, President of the All India Sikh Students Federation (Eastern India), seeking justice for the families affected by the 1984 Sikh riots.
Acting on the High Court’s directions, the Jharkhand government constituted a one-member commission led by D.P. Singh to verify and process the claims of the victim families. Following submission and verification of supporting documents, compensation payments to eligible victims began.
Today, Harjit Singh Dhami, accompanied by his associate Sukhwinder Singh, visited the office of Satnam Singh Gambhir to personally thank him for his efforts. They presented him with a bouquet of flowers as a mark of appreciation. Satnam Singh Gambhir assured that his struggle to secure justice for all Sikh riot victims would continue. The occasion was also attended by Inderpal Singh Bhamra and Namanjyot Singh.
