Jamshedpur: Winter tightened its hold over Jharkhand on Wednesday as a cold wave swept through several districts, driving temperatures sharply downward, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi, said.
Gumla emerged as the coldest location in the state, with the mercury plunging to 3.9°C, triggering official cold wave conditions. Other parts of the state also reported below-normal night temperatures, with Ranchi recording a minimum of 8.5°C and Jamshedpur 12.6°C.
Day temperatures remained largely subdued across Jharkhand. Chaibasa logged the highest maximum temperature at 26.8°C, while Ranchi’s daytime temperature stood at 23.2°C, slightly below the seasonal average.
Early morning dense fog added to the wintry conditions, reducing visibility to as low as 400 metres in Deoghar, and about 500 metres in Ranchi and Jamshedpur, affecting normal movement. The state remained dry, with no rainfall reported in the past 24 hours.
Meteorological department officials indicated that cold and dry weather is likely to persist, especially during the night and early morning hours, and advised residents to take necessary precautions against the prevailing chill.
