Minimum temperatures spike in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: Winter’s chill took an unexpected pause today as minimum temperatures across Kolhan witnessed a sharp rise, bringing a temporary respite from the cold. Kolhan region, including Jamshedpur, Chaibasa, and Seraikela, experienced unseasonably high minimum temperatures, with readings hovering around 16 to 17 degrees Celsius.

In Jamshedpur, the mercury settled at a surprising 16 degrees Celsius, while Chaibasa in neighboring West Singhbhum district recorded a close 15.6 degrees. Seraikela topped the region’s charts with a minimum of 17 degrees. Meanwhile, state capital Ranchi and Daltonganj recorded minimums of about 13 degrees Celsius, and Khunti and Simdega recorded 12.2 and 13.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The abrupt warm spell is attributed to a combination of atmospheric systems influencing the region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a well-marked low-pressure area persists over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. This system, coupled with an associated upper cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, has disrupted the typical winter pattern.

Adding to the atmospheric complexity is a western disturbance. Acting as a trough in the lower and middle tropospheric westerlies, the disturbance’s axis also lies at 5.8 km above sea level. These combined factors have momentarily stalled the onset of colder temperatures across Jharkhand.

Despite these developments, IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre has assured residents that fair weather is expected to return starting tomorrow. Additionally, meteorologists predict that the minimum temperatures will likely begin to dip again after the next 24 hours, restoring the seasonal chill.

No weather alerts have been issued for the next 48 hours, signaling a calm interlude in the state’s atmospheric conditions. However, meteorologists continue to monitor the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a depression as it moves northward.

The temporary rise in temperature has brought mixed reactions from residents. While some welcomed the reprieve from biting cold mornings, others expressed concern about the erratic weather patterns, a phenomenon increasingly linked to global climate change.

As Jharkhand braces for the return of wintry conditions, experts emphasize the importance of staying prepared for temperature fluctuations, which have become a hallmark of the region’s evolving climatic profile.
