MGM College gets state’s first MRU after five years

Jamshedpur, May 23: The MGM Medical College in Dimna today finally got the state’s first Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MRU), which was hanging for the last five years. The unit will play crucial role in the medical cradle in promoting research activities.

Principal of the state-owned medical college Dr. A.C. Akhoury who inaugurated the MRU on the college premises this afternoon said the research unit spread in 300 square metres area on the second floor has been funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the apex body for promotion of biomedical research.

Significantly, the central government back in 2013 had started the plan to set up MRU is MGM along with 80 colleges of the country and a fund of Rs 5 crore was allotted to each college. Most of the colleges established the MRU but the paper and land work process took four years for MGM to set up the unit.

Addressing the gathering, principal AC Akhouri said, recently a MoU was signed between the central and the state government under which the MRUs in medical colleges would be operated by the state government after five years of its set up.

” It is a major achievment. Our college was selected among the 80 medical colleges of the country for the MRU project in 2014. The Union government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for setting up the research lab and installation of equipments,” said Akhoury.

An official said currently they will focus on diseases like cervical cancer, sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia. ” We will carry out research on the cause and prevention of the three diseases which are prevalent among the local tribals and marginalised,” he noted.

It may be mentioned that State Government governed Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital, is an Indian medical school established in 1964.

It is situated in the outskirts of Jamshedpur near Dimna.

The students are admitted through an All India pre medical test CBSE PMT held by CBSE and Jharkhand and Bihar states’ combined entrance tests.

The college’s hospital is located in Sakchi. Currently there is post graduate education in non clinical and para clinical subjects.
