Mahesh Dixit Appointed New Intelligence Bureau Director

New Delhi (IANS): The Central government has appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Mahesh Dixit as the new Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director. Dixit will take over the reins of the country’s internal security and counter-intelligence agency from the incumbent chief, Tapan Kumar Deka.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), which cleared the appointment of the 1993-batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre. Dixit will lead the agency for a two-year tenure from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders.

The Official Mandate

The official statement read:

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Mahesh Dixit, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre and Special Director of Intelligence Bureau, as Intelligence Bureau Director succeeding Tapan Kumar Deka, a 1988-batch IPS officer from Himachal Pradesh, for a tenure of two years from the date of assumption of the charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier, by granting extension in service under the provisions of FR 56(d) and Rule 16 (1A) of All India Services (Death cum Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.”

A Veteran of Internal Security

Dixit currently serves as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. Within the bureau, colleagues widely regard him as one of the agency’s most experienced officers in intelligence gathering and internal security operations.

Dixit spent a significant part of his career in Jammu and Kashmir, where he led the Intelligence Bureau’s Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Srinagar. In that role, he oversaw intelligence operations across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. He also played a pivotal role in monitoring security developments following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

Furthermore, Dixit brings extensive experience in counter-terrorism operations, having handled several sensitive assignments within the bureau. His track record includes dismantling Pakistan-backed infiltration networks, monitoring radicalization activities, and neutralizing threats linked to Left-Wing Extremism.

The Intelligence Bureau serves as India’s primary internal security and counter-intelligence agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs. As one of the oldest intelligence organizations in the world, the bureau gathers domestic intelligence, conducts counter-terrorism operations, and safeguards critical infrastructure.
