Noel Tata to exit key Tata operating boards at 70, retains Tata Sons seat

Noel Tata will step down from the boards of six major Tata Group operating companies when he turns 70 on November 12.
This step aligns with the group’s corporate governance framework and retirement policy. Under these guidelines, non-executive directors step down upon reaching the age of 70.
He will vacate top leadership positions at Trent, Voltas, Tata Steel, Titan Company, Tata Investment Corporation, and Tata International. He will also leave Tata International West Asia DMCC.
Additionally, he will exit his directorships at Inditex Trent Retail and Trent Hypermarket. The industry now anticipates key succession decisions across these operating companies in the coming days.
Reports suggest he may facilitate board appointments for his children, Neville Tata or his two daughters, in the affected companies.
Despite stepping down from operating firms, Noel Tata will retain his seat on the board of Tata Sons. He serves as a nominee director for the Tata Trusts.
The Tata Trusts hold a 66% controlling stake in Tata Sons, the group’s primary holding company.
This administrative shift coincides with ongoing friction within the Tata Sons board regarding the leadership tenure of Executive Chairman N. Chandrasekaran.
The board recently approved a proposal to extend N. Chandrasekaran’s term for five more years from February 2027. Noel Tata opposed this decision during the voting process.
The Tata Trusts have questioned the validity of that decision under the company’s Articles of Association. Noel Tata formally requested board meeting minutes and recordings on October 26.
Disagreements also persist over the proposed stock market listing of Tata Sons. The Trusts oppose an IPO, while RBI regulations for upper-layer NBFCs push for public listing.
