Jamshedpur, April 28: Serious irregularities were discovered during a surprise inspection of Kasturba Gandhi Residential School in Sundarnagar on Tuesday by Potka MLA Sanjib Sardar, raising major concerns about the institution’s functioning, discipline and student welfare.

Upon reaching the school around 10:30 AM, the MLA encountered an unexpected situation when the hostel warden, Reena Kumari Singh—who had reportedly been serving for over 12 years—failed to recognize him and asked for his identity. Even after being informed, she reportedly stated that she still did not recognize him, leading to a tense exchange.

The inspection revealed a troubling academic environment. In Class 12, students were present but no teacher was assigned. When asked basic general knowledge questions, including the population of Jharkhand and India, none of the approximately 40 students could respond. A similar situation prevailed in Class 11. In Class 10, as many as 68 students were present without a teacher, while several other classrooms were found completely empty.

Expressing strong displeasure, the MLA immediately informed District Education Officer Manoj Kumar and directed that corrective action be taken within three days. He also sought a formal explanation from the warden regarding the irregularities.

The inspection of the school kitchen further exposed alarming conditions. The MLA observed unhygienic surroundings, including piles of garbage and swarms of flies. He warned that food prepared under such conditions posed serious health risks to students and instructed staff to maintain strict hygiene and ensure quality food preparation.

Adding to the concerns, allegations of irregularities in student admissions surfaced during the visit. A villager, Bhokta Hansda of Pudihasa, informed the MLA that his daughter, despite belonging to a Below Poverty Line (BPL) family, was denied admission, while others were admitted in violation of rules. Parents alleged that the warden exercised arbitrary control over admissions, sparking widespread resentment.

Taking note of these complaints, the MLA assured parents that a thorough investigation would be conducted. He stated that the grievances raised by villagers appeared valid upon initial assessment.

Highlighting systemic issues, Sardar pointed out that although 22 teachers were officially posted at the school, many remained absent from classrooms, severely impacting students’ education. He also emphasized that the poor condition of the kitchen further endangered student health.

The MLA directed the district administration to initiate an immediate inquiry and take strict action against those responsible. He added that the matter would soon be brought to the attention of the State Education Minister.

Reiterating his stance, Sardar asserted that no compromise would be tolerated when it came to the education and health of students, calling for accountability and urgent reforms in the institution.
