Elephant Menace Reaches Villages in Chandil, School Kitchen Damaged

Fear Grips Residents as Wild Elephants Venture into Human Settlements

Jamshedpur: The growing menace of wild elephants in the Chandil subdivision has become a major concern for residents, with elephant movement now extending beyond forest areas into villages located in the plains. The frequent intrusion of elephants into human settlements has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among local communities.

Residents say they are increasingly reluctant to venture out alone after dark as herds of wild elephants have been entering villages without warning, causing widespread destruction and posing a serious threat to human life.

Increasing Human-Elephant Conflict

The movement of elephants into populated areas has led to significant damage to standing crops, houses, schools, and other infrastructure. While villagers suffer financial losses and safety concerns, the elephants themselves are also facing dangers, with several incidents of injury and death occurring as they stray from their natural habitats into human-dominated landscapes.

Forest officials and local residents have expressed concern over the escalating human-elephant conflict and the need for effective mitigation measures.

Elephant Enters Primary School Premises

In a fresh incident reported from Chandil block, a wild elephant entered the premises of Bidri Primary School under Urmal Panchayat at around 1:30 am on Wednesday. The animal reportedly broke through the school’s boundary wall before entering the campus.

The unexpected intrusion caused panic among local residents and resulted in extensive damage to school property.

Mid-Day Meal Supplies Destroyed

After entering the school premises, the elephant damaged the kitchen shed and consumed a portion of the rice meant for the mid-day meal programme. Approximately five sacks of rice were scattered and rendered unusable during the incident.

The collapse of the kitchen shed also damaged an iron gas stove and several other items stored inside the facility, affecting the school’s food preparation arrangements.

Forest Department Begins Assessment

Upon receiving information about the incident, officials from the Forest Department reached the site and conducted an assessment of the damage caused by the elephant. Following the inspection, the department initiated the necessary official procedures related to compensation and documentation of the losses.

The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for long-term solutions to address the increasing movement of wild elephants into human settlements across the Chandil region.
