Ranchi, Apr 18: The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday reviewed a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning the delay in regular appointments of assistant professors and staff in state universities. The Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) informed the court that only a limited number of requisitions—437 posts—have been received from a few universities.

The JPSC stated that many universities are yet to send their requirements. A new advertisement will be issued for these appointments. “A new chairman has taken over and the appointment process will be accelerated,” the commission assured.

The bench directed the JPSC to file a status report by July 24. The PIL was filed by Aniket Ohdar, who raised concerns about continued reliance on contractual staff in academic institutions.

In the previous hearing, the court had sharply questioned the state government, saying, “Till when will temporary appointments continue? When will there be permanent appointments for teaching and non-teaching posts?”

The upcoming hearing will now monitor the progress on regularizing university staffing, as the court presses for structural reforms in state higher education.
