Ranchi, Apr 10: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) will hold its 13th General Convention at Harivansh Tana Bhagat Stadium in Khelgaon, Ranchi, on April 14–15. The party is expected to table a proposal for a land restitution law aimed at restoring land to tribal families lacking ownership papers.
The proposal addresses a longstanding issue in Santhal Pargana, where nearly 1 lakh tribal families live on ancestral lands without legal documentation. “It’s the government’s duty to implement court orders on tribal land ownership,” stated JMM General Secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya.
The convention will see participation from over 3,000 representatives from Jharkhand and neighboring states. Among other proposals, the JMM will push for a ban on MLAs holding party posts such as district or block president, preventing district or block presidents from contesting assembly elections and opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill, aligning with West Bengal’s stance.
The party will also deliberate on transforming JMM into a national political force. The leadership is optimistic after recent electoral wins under Hemant Soren. “Our movement started with Shibu Soren’s ideals. Now it’s time to expand,” said a senior party official.
National-level positioning and the demand for a ‘Greater Jharkhand’ will also feature prominently in political proposals during the convention.
