Jharkhand’s Gumla: End the superstition-driven violence

The relentless cycle of murders rooted in superstition in Jharkhand’s rural and tribal areas must come to an end. The recent incident in Gumla, where an elderly man was thrown into a burning pyre by his neighbours, is yet another horrifying example of this barbaric practice. Such news surfaces frequently, highlighting a grim reality where belief in witchcraft and ghosts continues to fuel violence.

In an age of science and technological advancements, it is tragic that such superstitions persist. Women are often branded as witches and beaten to death, while men face similar fates under accusations of practicing black magic or exorcism. Shockingly, even children have been sacrificed in the name of these baseless beliefs. These acts are a dark stain on society, showcasing ignorance and cruelty that have no place in modern times.

To address this, a large-scale campaign is urgently needed to educate people and dispel these superstitions. Awareness initiatives must reach the grassroots level, empowering communities with knowledge to reject such outdated practices. It is essential to emphasize that witches, sorcerers, and ghostly powers do not exist. Superstition is nothing but a tool of exploitation, often used to settle personal disputes or seize property. Innocent lives are lost due to false accusations, and families are destroyed.

The government must play a proactive role by enacting and enforcing stringent laws against such heinous acts. Perpetrators of superstition-driven murders should face the harshest punishments, ensuring justice for the victims and deterring future crimes. However, laws alone cannot eradicate this deep-rooted issue. Society itself must take responsibility to challenge and eliminate these harmful beliefs.

Community leaders, teachers, and influencers can play a pivotal role in spreading awareness. Schools and local institutions should incorporate lessons on critical thinking and the dangers of superstition. Religious and cultural leaders must speak out against these practices, dismantling the notion that violence and murder can ever be justified in the name of faith.

Families and individuals must also act as watchdogs in their communities, reporting suspicious activities and protecting vulnerable members from becoming targets. Encouraging dialogue and fostering an environment where people feel safe to question age-old beliefs is crucial for progress.

The murders associated with witch-hunting and exorcism are a societal curse that we must overcome together. By combining legal measures, educational campaigns, and collective action, we can put an end to this violence and build a society where superstition no longer claims innocent lives. It is time to reject fear and ignorance and embrace reason and humanity.
