Jamshedpur: MLA of Jamshedpur West Saryu Roy announced that the government will construct a sluice gate along the Subarnarekha River at Shyam Nagar (Shankosai, Mango). The project aims to prevent river water from backflowing through drains into low-lying residential areas during the monsoon, a recurring issue that causes heavy flooding in the locality.
Residents at the end of Shankosai Road No. 1 in Shyam Nagar face annual displacement when the river’s rising water level pushes back through the drainage system, submerging their homes.
Details of the Proposal
MLA Saryu Roy had formally proposed the sluice gate construction to the Chief Engineer of the Subarnarekha Project. Additionally, he requested the reinforcement and strengthening of the Subarnarekha riverbank stretching from Mango Bridge to Gour Bustee.
According to Roy, the Chief Engineer has finalized the estimates for both projects and forwarded them to the Engineer-in-Chief of the Water Resources Department at the Ranchi Secretariat for final approval and fund allocation.
Budgetary Breakdown
The proposed projects involve a combined investment of nearly Rs 12 crore:
- Shyam Nagar Sluice Gate: Estimated cost of approximately Rs 2.38 crore.
- Riverbank Strengthening (Mango Bridge to Gour Bustee): Estimated cost of approximately Rs 9.41 crore.
The Chief Engineer submitted these estimates via letter on December 27, 2025.
Timeline for Execution
Roy recently discussed the matter with M.L. Pingua, the Engineer-in-Chief of the Water Resources Department. Pingua assured the MLA that the department would secure government funding and initiate the work shortly.
Once complete, the projects will provide long-awaited relief from flooding to the residents of Shyam Nagar and facilitate the beautification and strengthening of the riverfront from Mango Bridge to Gour Bustee.
