Jamshedpur: Angry over not seeing their favourite players in action for the last four days a section of the crowd gathered at Keenan stadium to watch Jharkhand-Ranji match pelted stones and empty water bottles on the ground on Wednesday.
The Group ‘A’ Ranji trophy tie between the host association and Delhi was abandoned on the fourth and last day after umpires inspected the field last at 12 a.m.
As soon as the announcement was made in this regard annoyed crowd pelted stones on the ground. “Why there’s no match for the last four days when the sky is clear from Sunday last,” asked a disappointed cricket fan outside the stadium apparently reflecting the dominating view of the crowd that was keenly coming to the stadium on each day with hope to see their favourite stars in action.
Justifying the anger of the crowd, Jharkhand State Cricket Association said the match could not be played due to sluggish outfield.
“The cricket loving crowd was waiting patiently to see their favourite players such as Gutam Gambhir (captain of the visiting team) and Virendra Sehwag in action but got disappointed when the match got abandoned,” said Rajesh Verma, secretary, JSCA.
The Bistupur police that arrived on the spot immediately after the occurrence however denied about stone pelting incident.
“The crowd disappointed over no play for the last four days created chaos in the gallery but it was dispersed immediately,” said Bistupur officer in-charge, A K Yadav. Host Jharkhand and Delhi shared a point each after the four-day match was abandoned without a ball being bowled on the concluding day.
