Clashes broke out between BJP and Trinamool Congress workers outside the residence of Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee early Saturday morning.
The violence erupted in phases between 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. in Kolkata. Supporters had gathered near his house to celebrate his 39th birthday.
Witnesses stated that BJP workers arrived at the spot and raised derogatory slogans. Trinamool supporters claimed the rival group tore down Banerjee’s birthday banners and cutouts.
An argument quickly escalated into physical scuffles and heavy stone pelting between both political factions. The violent altercations left several people injured on both sides.
A large police force reached the scene shortly after the violence began. Officers used baton charges to disperse the clashing political workers and restore order.
Banerjee stepped outside his house during the commotion to meet his injured supporters. He immediately alleged a direct attempt on his life by the BJP.
He also accused BJP supporters of ransacking a nearby Trinamool Congress party office. Following the violence, the Diamond Harbour MP sat on a protest outside his residence.
On-duty police officers asked him to end the demonstration to prevent further escalation. Banerjee argued briefly with the police before finally returning inside at around 6:30 a.m.
Later, Banerjee released a statement on social media criticizing the police and judiciary. He shared video footage and photos alleging that BJP hooligans attacked his house.
He claimed that political opponents conducted a two-day recce before launching the late-night attack. Banerjee declared that this incident marked the seventh attempt on his life recently.
He expressed anger over the lack of police action against the perpetrators. He also criticized the judiciary for remaining silent while political violence continued across the state.
