Ranchi: The future of nearly 3.5 lakh trained teachers in Jharkhand hangs in the balance as the Jharkhand Teacher Eligibility Test (JTET) remains stalled for the ninth consecutive year. The Jharkhand Trained Teachers’ Association has now intensified its demand, calling on the state government to finalize the revised manual and conduct the exam without further delay.
A Violation of National Standards
According to the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) guidelines, teacher eligibility tests should be held at least once a year. However, in the 26 years since Jharkhand’s inception, the exam has been conducted only twice—in 2013 and 2016. Association representatives argue that this administrative failure is forcing qualified candidates into mental and financial distress while causing them to lag behind national standards.
The Flip-Flop of Notifications
The frustration among candidates peaked after a series of administrative setbacks:
-
August 2024: Applications were finally invited, drawing 3.5 lakh aspirants.
-
Syllabus Dispute: The notification was soon withdrawn due to a flawed syllabus.
-
Language Controversy: A second manual based on district-wise languages was drafted but also retracted following widespread protests.
CM’s Assurance: A Ray of Hope?
Following peaceful marches and sit-ins, a seven-member delegation recently met with the Chief Minister. The CM has reportedly assured the candidates that the manual would be finalized and the examination process initiated within one month.
The Association remains skeptical but hopeful, urging the government to turn this assurance into action to provide justice to the state’s aspiring educators.
