Kolhan University Senate Meets After Four Years, Campus to go Wi-Fi, CCTV Surveillance System Planned

Jamshedpur: In a significant step towards institutional revival, Kolhan University convened its sixth Senate meeting at Chaibasa after a prolonged gap of nearly four years, unveiling an ambitious roadmap for academic, administrative, and digital transformation.

Focus on modernization and smart campus

A key highlight of the deliberations was the university’s renewed focus on modernization. Plans are advancing rapidly to transform the central library into a fully automated facility to enhance academic research and accessibility.

Proposals for campus-wide Wi-Fi connectivity and installation of a comprehensive CCTV surveillance system are also under active consideration, indicating a clear push towards developing a smart campus ecosystem.

Strong participation and symbolic beginning

The meeting was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Anjila Gupta, nominated by the Governor-cum-Chancellor. Expressing gratitude, she acknowledged the consistent support of the state government and the Higher Education Department in strengthening the university’s functioning.

The session witnessed an impressive turnout, with 57 out of 65 Senate members in attendance, including legislators, academicians, nominated members, and student representatives. Proceedings began on a symbolic note with the presentation of saplings, reflecting a shared commitment to growth and sustainability.

Administrative reforms and financial relief

Addressing the Senate, the Vice-Chancellor outlined major administrative and academic reforms undertaken over the past year. Regular statutory meetings—including those of the Syndicate, Academic Council, and Examination Board—have helped streamline governance.

These initiatives have led to the clearance of long-pending dues, including nearly 11 months of salaries for vocational course teachers and payments to outsourced personnel, bringing much-needed relief to staff.

Boost to academic infrastructure

In a significant move to strengthen teaching and learning, the university has initiated a comprehensive assessment of laboratory equipment needs across postgraduate departments and affiliated colleges.

The exercise aims to ensure that institutions are adequately equipped from the upcoming academic session, thereby improving the quality of practical education.

Alignment with NEP and library expansion

In line with the National Education Policy 2020, the university has begun expanding its library resources. Updated book lists for undergraduate, postgraduate, and vocational courses are being procured to ensure improved access to academic materials for students.

Digital push with e-Samarth

Digital transformation has emerged as a major focus area, with the adoption of the ‘e-Samarth’ Management Information System. This platform is expected to streamline services related to salaries, pensions, student data, and administrative records.

Officials stated that the university is currently among the leading institutions in the state in terms of digital integration.

Promotions and staff welfare

On the administrative front, long-pending issues related to faculty promotions and salary increments have been addressed. Promotions pending for over a decade have been processed, while arrears and increments due since 2020 have been released.

The process for promotion of non-teaching staff has also been initiated, marking a significant step towards employee welfare.

Expansion of higher education infrastructure

The Senate also reviewed the ongoing expansion of higher education infrastructure across the Kolhan region. Several new degree colleges are under construction in areas such as Majhgaon, Manoharpur, Kharsawan, Chakulia, and others, aimed at improving access to higher education.

Key decisions and future direction

Deliberating on eight major agenda items, the Senate emphasized transparency, sustained reforms, and student-centric policies. The meeting concluded with a collective resolve to reposition the university as a leading center of higher education in Jharkhand.

The long-awaited session has not only revived the university’s apex decision-making body but has also set the stage for a new phase of growth, innovation, and accountability.
