Jharkhand First Phase Poll: NDA, INDI brace for high stakes clash today

INDI win will further cement Soren family’s authority, NDA victory will make Sarma’s stature taller

Jharkhand is set for a high-stakes political showdown as the first phase of voting in the Assembly elections unfolds on Wednesday, November 13. Voters in 43 constituencies will decide the fate of key candidates, with a fierce contest between the NDA and INDIA Bloc poised to dominate the day. In 2019, the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance captured 25 of these seats, while the BJP managed 13, leaving the rest to Independents and smaller parties. This time, the NDA aims to increase its tally, while the INDIA Bloc is focused on solidifying its previous gains.

With six ministers and several prominent leaders on the ballot, this phase is as much about reputations as it is about numbers. Notably, former Chief Minister Champai Soren, who joined the BJP shortly after being ousted from his top post, is contesting his traditional stronghold in Saraikela. Soren has held this seat six times since 1991, losing only once in 2000. This election, he faces JMM’s Ganesh Mahali—who, in a twist, was the BJP’s candidate in previous elections. Both heavyweights have now swapped political sides, setting the stage for an intense face-off.

Key Constituencies and High-Stakes Battles

In Lohardaga, Congress Minister Rameshwar Oraon finds himself in a tight race with Neeru Shanti Bhagat from the AJSU Party. Last time, a split between BJP and AJSU votes worked in Oraon’s favor, but with the BJP-AJSU alliance now united, Oraon faces a tougher challenge.

Garhwa constituency is seeing a three-way fight as Minister Mithilesh Thakur defends his seat against BJP’s Satyendra Nath Tiwari and former Minister Girinath Singh of the Samajwadi Party. Both opponents are previous MLAs from this constituency, making Garhwa a battleground to watch.

In Jamshedpur West, Congress Minister Banna Gupta faces a direct contest with former JDU Minister Saryu Rai. Each has held this seat twice, but Rai’s reputation soared in 2019 when he defeated then-Chief Minister Raghubar Das in Jamshedpur East. He now returns to Jamshedpur West, his former stronghold, promising another close race.

Rising Stakes in Strategic Seats

In Chaibasa, JMM Minister Deepak Birua faces BJP’s Geeta Balmuchu, a first-time candidate who has gained significant local support. Meanwhile, in Ghatsila, JMM’s Ramdas Soren is challenged by Babulal Soren, son of former Chief Minister Champai Soren. Babulal’s debut campaign leans heavily on his father’s legacy.

Latehar, a seat with a history of voting out incumbents every election, presents a tough challenge for JMM’s Baidyanath Ram as he seeks to break the trend against BJP’s Prakash Ram.

The Showdown in Ranchi and Other Key Seats

In the high-profile Ranchi constituency, former Speaker and BJP leader C.P. Singh faces JMM’s Dr. Mahua Maji, currently a Rajya Sabha MP. In Potka, Meera Munda, wife of former Chief Minister Arjun Munda, challenges sitting JMM MLA Sanjeev Sardar.

Other significant races include Jagannathpur, where Geeta Koda, wife of former Chief Minister Madhu Koda, contests against Congress MLA Sona Ram Sinku. In Jamshedpur East, former IPS officer and Congress spokesperson Ajay Kumar is up against BJP’s Purnima Das Sahu, daughter-in-law of Odisha Governor Raghubar Das, in a contest complicated by the presence of BJP rebel Shivshankar Singh.

With voting just hours away, all eyes are on these pivotal races and the potential political shifts they could bring as Jharkhand’s first phase of voting promises a dramatic start to the Assembly elections.
