Jamshedpur: In the upcoming 2024 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, the influence of experience continues to resonate strongly among voters, as history shows a trend of successful candidates over 60 years of age.
Since the formation of Jharkhand, elections have seen both young leaders and seasoned candidates making significant contributions.
According to the Election Commission data, in 2005, 18 candidates over 60years had contested the elections, of whom five emerged victorious. The notable winners from this age group included veterans like Kariya Munda, Inder Singh Namdhari, and Loknath Mahto, while some prominent figures, such as Rajendra Prasad Singh, Yamuna Singh, and Samaresh Singh, faced a defeat.
In 2009, the appeal of experienced leaders grew further, with eight out of 20 candidates aged above 60years and above won their seats. This marked an increase from 2005 when only five in this age group won.
Returning candidates Rajendra Singh and Samaresh Singh were victorious, representing the Bermo and Bokaro constituencies, respectively. The former Speaker, Inder Singh Namdhari, also achieved success in the 2007 by-elections at age 63 and later transitioned to parliamentary politics in 2009.
By 2014, the trend continued with an equal split, as 10 out of 20 senior candidates over 60years won, and 10 were defeated. The oldest winner in the election was Phoolchand Mandal, aged 71.
Other successful candidates over 60 included leaders like Saryu Roy, Ramchandra Chandravanshi, Raj Kishore Mahto, and Stephen Marandi. Notable candidates who lost included Haji Hussain Ansari and Samaresh Singh, reflecting the mixed but growing support for experienced leaders.
In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, candidates aged 60 and above achieved their highest success rate to date. Out of the 27 candidates in this age bracket, an impressive 17 won. Key winners included Rajendra Prasad Singh (73), Ramchandra Chandravanshi (72), Dr. Rameshwar Oraon (72), and Haji Hussain Ansari (70). This election saw strong support for senior leaders, with other successful candidates like Alamgir Alam, Saryu Roy, and Baboolal Marandi securing seats.
As Jharkhand heads into the 2024 Assembly Elections, the legacy of experience-driven leadership remains influential. This historical perspective highlights voters’ trust in leaders who bring years of expertise to the table, balancing youthful leadership with seasoned guidance.
