Jamshedpur witnesses 31 road accidents in June, Rs 11 lakh collected in fines

Traffic and Road Safety Meeting

Jamshedpur: June witnessed a troubling spike in road accidents, with 31 incidents reported resulting in 14 fatalities and 20 serious injuries. This alarming trend has prompted local authorities to take decisive action to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents.

In response to the rising number of accidents, particularly those caused by driving in the wrong direction, the District Magistrate cum Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal has issued strict directives. A significant concern is the prevalence of wrong-way driving, which has emerged as a leading cause of many road mishaps. To combat this issue, authorities have been instructed to take stringent action against drivers found violating traffic rules.

In June alone, 353 driving licenses were suspended for various road safety violations, highlighting the severity of the situation. Additionally, a vehicle checking campaign was conducted, revealing numerous infractions such as two-wheeler drivers without helmets and four-wheeler drivers not wearing seat belts. These violations resulted in fines exceeding Rs. 11 lakh, underscoring the need for heightened enforcement and compliance with safety regulations.

To address these concerns, a comprehensive meeting of the Traffic and Road Safety Committee was held at the Collectorate Auditorium in Jamshedpur. Chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner Yogendra Prasad, the meeting reviewed critical issues including hit-and-run accidents, traffic congestion, parking problems, and the effectiveness of road safety awareness campaigns.

The meeting emphasized the need for a swift resolution of pending applications related to hit-and-run cases, with directives to expedite compensation payments to the affected families. Discussions also focused on tackling black spots—areas prone to frequent accidents—by implementing necessary safety measures.

Additional concerns addressed during the meeting included controlling overspeeding and dangerous driving stunts performed by youths. The need for effective action against such behaviors was highlighted, aiming to prevent potential accidents and ensure safer roads for all.

In attendance at the meeting were key officials, including DTO Dhananjay, representatives from the Education Department, NHAI, Traffic DSP, and other relevant departmental personnel. Their collective efforts are geared towards improving traffic management, enforcing road safety laws, and fostering a culture of compliance and awareness among drivers.

The initiatives and directives from the meeting reflect a commitment to reducing road accidents and enhancing public safety. By addressing critical issues and enforcing stringent measures, the local administration aims to create a safer driving environment and reduce the number of accidents in the future.
