Jamshedpur, Dec 7: Newly elected Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy convened a review meeting with Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC) officials, including Deputy Municipal Commissioner Suresh Prasad Yadav and subordinate officers, to assess its functioning and address pressing concerns. Roy emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in MMC’s working system to improve services for residents.
During the meeting, it was revealed that out of 103 sanctioned posts, only 36 employees are currently working, with many on daily wages or contracts. Expressing his dissatisfaction, Roy stated, “The vacancy of 67 posts is a serious concern. This staff shortage is significantly hampering the corporation’s efficiency.”
When discussing essential services like drinking water, electricity, sanitation, and streetlights, Roy found that many functions were outsourced, and contracts for some services had already expired. “The dependency on outsourcing is not sustainable. The corporation must create clear policies and improve coordination to ensure uninterrupted services,” Roy remarked.
He also urged MMC to expand the door-to-door garbage collection campaign and streamline policies for colonies and multi-storey buildings to prevent inconveniences for residents. Highlighting sanitation issues, Roy directed officials to ensure that garbage and drain cleaning are carried out in a coordinated manner. He insisted, “Garbage from drains must be removed the same day. Workers should be allocated tasks based on manageable distances, and the cleaning budget should be increased accordingly.”
Discussing infrastructure, officials informed Roy that the MMC oversees 245.57 km of roads and drains, but only 51.55 km of drains are covered. Additionally, 5527 streetlights and 35 high mast lights have been installed, but most are non-functional due to lapses by the EESL agency. “Such inefficiencies are unacceptable. The agency must be held accountable, and solutions implemented immediately,” Roy asserted.
Regarding street vendors, Roy directed MMC to organize permanent spaces for 2875 vendors. He also recommended collaborating with the Agricultural Market Committee to improve the Mango Market. “Street vendors need designated areas to operate without chaos, enhancing both their livelihoods and urban order,” he said.
Roy concluded by urging MMC to study successful models like Indore’s municipal system and implement similar reforms on a pilot basis. He cautioned, “The corporation cannot merely focus on collecting taxes while neglecting services. If the situation doesn’t improve, public frustration will escalate. Let’s work towards transforming Mango Municipal Corporation into a model of efficiency.”
Officials assured Roy of their commitment to implementing the suggested changes to enhance municipal services and infrastructure.
