Jamshedpur to get 10-Km elephant detection system

Jamshedpur: Elephant deaths on railway tracks have emerged as a major concern for both the forest department and Indian Railways in the East Singhbhum region.

Frequent train collisions with elephant herds moving through forested corridors have raised alarm, prompting authorities to adopt stronger preventive measures.

To curb these incidents, a 10-kilometre early detection system is set to be installed along vulnerable railway stretches.

The technology will use thermal cameras, sensors and AI-based monitoring to spot elephant movement from a long distance.

Once detected, automated alerts will reach railway control rooms, nearby stations and loco pilots, allowing them to slow down or stop trains in time.

Forest officials and railway teams are jointly identifying high-risk routes and increasing ground patrols.

Awareness efforts are also underway for train drivers and local communities living near elephant corridors.

Authorities believe the new detection system will play a crucial role in reducing fatal collisions and protecting both wildlife and railway passengers.
