Jamshedpur, April 5: Members of Jamshedpur Abhibhavak Sangh, a parents’ body, have requested the state government to change the school timings in view of the soaring mercury levels.

The outfit president Dr Umesh Kumar said a memorandum had been sent to Chief Minister Hemant Soren in this regard.

“The scorching summer has started showing its effect on one and all right from April this year. The maximum temperature has touched 41.2 degree centigrade which is morethan the normal temperature. Such extremely hot weather can seriously affect the health of children, especially younger ones. This is why we have demanded that the schools should be run from 6.30 am till 11.30 am,” said Kumar.

Kumar said the education department of Jharkhand government recently directed all government schools to run from 7 am till 1 pm. In the summer season, the weather is hottest from noon till 2 pm. In such a situation, sending kids to school during this period can seriously have an adverse effect on their health, he said.

Copies of the memorandum have also been sent to the state Education Minister and the Deputy Commissioner of East Singhbhum, said Kumar.

Meanwhile, All Jharkhand Primary Teachers Association has demanded that the government schools be run from 6.30 am till 11 am.
