Jamshedpur receives record 388 mm rainfall in June

Jamshedpur: The city has witnessed an exceptionally wet start to the monsoon season, recording a total of 388 mm of rainfall in June alone, according to data from the local meteorological observatory. In the last 24 hours, the city received an additional 45 mm of rainfall, further adding to the already high monthly total. The rainfall has brought the city into a 100 percent surplus rain zone.

The relentless downpour over the past few days has led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and a sharp rise in the water levels of Swarnarekha and Kharkai rivers, both of which have been flowing above the danger mark.

Weather experts attribute the above-normal rainfall to a well-marked low-pressure system over northeast Jharkhand, coupled with an east-west trough line passing through the region. These systems have intensified rainfall activity across Kolhan and adjoining districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more heavy showers in isolated parts of the state over the next few days, especially in northwestern and northeastern Jharkhand, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.

Meanwhile, officials of the district disaster management authority remain on alert. “With rivers still flowing above safe levels and the soil fully saturated, even moderate rainfall may lead to flash flooding or fresh inundation in vulnerable zones,” said an official monitoring the situation.
