Jamshedpur: Railway tests flood mitigation strategy at Jugsalai Pigment underbridge

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, July 2: The Indian Railways has taken proactive steps to address the perennial flooding issue at the Railway underbridge number 27B near Jugsalai Veer Kunwar Singh Chowk in Jamshedpur. On Tuesday, a mock drill was conducted to test and improve water removal measures, offering hope to city residents who face significant disruptions during the rainy season.

Led by Ranjit Kumar, IOW (West) of the Tatanagar Engineering Department, the drill focused on testing the efficiency of water pumps and drainage systems. The exercise aimed to determine how quickly accumulated water could be removed from the underpass, which has been known to submerge even buses during heavy rains.

“Our team will be ready to implement these relief measures whenever waterlogging occurs during the rainy season,” Kumar stated. The mock drill involved temporarily closing the road, with local residents cooperating once they understood the purpose of the exercise.

The problem stems from inadequate drainage in the area, particularly when sudden, heavy rainfall overwhelms the existing system. Officials from the Chakradharpur Division have instructed the local department to collaborate with the Jugsalai Nagar Parishad to clean the pigment drain, which is seen as a crucial step in mitigating the flooding issue.

While the mock drill represents a temporary solution, it’s part of a broader strategy to ensure that passengers can reach trains on time and locals face minimal disruption during monsoons. The railway authorities are exploring both immediate and long-term solutions to this recurring problem.

Present at the drill were department employees Anil Singh, Sanjit Pal, Robin Chatterjee, Birbal, Dukhhi Ram, Nitin Kumar, and Aghan Mahato, demonstrating the railways’ commitment to addressing this community concern.
