Jamshedpur police officer arrested in Varsha Patel murder, claims he was blackmailed

Jamshedpur, Nov 22: In a breakthrough, police on Monday arrested an assistant sub-inspector, Dharmendra Kumar Singh in connection with the murder of Varsha Patel. Her body was found from a sack under the Telco police station area on November 18. ASI is said to be prime accused in the sensational murder case. He was sent to Ghaghidih Central Jail after production before a judicial magistrate in the afternoon.

The ASI was brought from his native place in Bhojpur district. Sources informed that he ran away after committing the murder on the night of November 12. During interrogation, he confessed the crime.

The police had recovered the body of a young woman from a sack that was found lying near a pond.  The body was identified as that of Varsha Patel, a resident of South Park in Bistupur.

Speaking about the breakthrough, the superintendent of police (City) Subhash Chandra Jat said that the ASI, Dharmendra murdered Varsha with whom he had an illicit relation.

“During investigation we found that the ASI who was posted in Sakchi police station strangulated the 32-year-old woman as the murder victim started blackmailing him. She was also not allowing him to go to his native place and used to exploit him financially, ” said Jat, while addressing a press meet.

The City SP said the ASI (39) had murdered the woman by strangulating her and had hit her head in the wall. “ The ASI tried everything to hide his crime. After killing the woman, the ASI who was married and father of two children had thrown her some ornaments in the Subarnarekha river and the smartphone in a place at Bistupur. Later he had stuffed the body in a plastic sack and carried it on his bike to a pond in Telco where he dropped it, ” said the City SP.

Jat said Dharmendra had gone over to Bhojpur to attend a marriage ceremony having taken leave from November 13. He said they have recovered the smartphone and the bike beside the plastic sack.
